What is C ?

C is a popular general purpose programming language. It was developed by Dennis Ritchie at AT & T Bell Laboratories in 1972. C is relatively small and it can be described in small space. It can be learned quickly. This language was officially formalized by the American National Standard Institute(ANSI) in 1988. Then, it was adopted by the International Standard Organization(ISO) in 1990. It is also called middle level computer language because it combines the features of high-level language such as statement grouping, decision making and looping as well as the functionality of low-level language such as ability to manipulate bytes and addresses. C is used to write the program in many different domains such as operating system, numerical computing and graphical applications, etc.

Features of C-programming

  • C is a offspring of the Basic Combined programming language that is B language which was developed in the year 1960 at combridge University.
  • It is well suited for writing both application software and system software.
  • C-program is very efficient, fast and highly portable that is program written on one computer can be run on another computer.
  • C is a structured programming language. That means, it consider several program as a small modules. So that, it is easy for debugging testing and maintenance.
  • It provides loop constructs like while, do-while and for.
  • It provides conditional constructs like if, goto, switch, break, etc.
  • It provides code re-usability.
  • C has limited number of keywords. There are only 32 keywords in C.
  • C program can run under many operating system.
  • C can be used for writing from small program to complex applications.
  • C language can be used to write the most of the operating system such as UNIX OS and LINIX OS.
